Montefico vineyard is located north west of Barbaresco village on calcareous marl soils with a good ammount of limestone and it is exactly in the middle of the hill. Montefico parcel covers an area of 0,24 hectare and the vines are minimun 50 years old. Roagna family purchased the parcel in 1929. After hand harvesting that usually takes place in october the grapes are manually select each berry in order to have perfect fruit. Fermentation take place in large wood casks with indigenous yeasts, maceration by splinting the submerged cap for at least two and half months. The wine is then aged in neutral oak barrel for 5 years. Roagna family decided to bring out this cru producing extremely limited bottles.
Montefico is a parcel that seems to gather the distinctive elements of the other crus and combine all the balance, power and finesse within it. All fruit and intensity, red and black fruit, herbs and balsamic note. Dense tannin, little bitterness. Notes of tamarind and roasted coffee intensify in the glass, demonstrating remarkable complexity and volume. In this splendid vintage an excellent acidity unites the whole wine giving balance and flavor length.
Roagna
Alfredo Roagna and his young son Luca are old-time vintners, so reserved and reluctant to relationships as they are extremely passionate about their work. They manage 15 hectares of vineyards divided between Barbaresco and Castiglione Falletto. The scrupulous dedication to the vineyard, with old vines of seventy years, translates into wines closely linked to tradition, vinified with very long macerations, from 30 days for Dolcetto to 90 for Nebbiolo. They are wines that preserve great naturalness, expressive intensity and tonicity of the remarkable fruit, it can present some grammatical uncertainty because of the absence of any industrial homogenization technique. Sumptuous the keeping and evolution over time.
