Volnay 1er Cru Les Champans Joseph Voillot 2022
One of Volnay's emblematic vineyards. Facing south east is an avigna which has similar traits to the Clos Saint Jacques. Joseph Voillot's Champans is the label that serves as an educational reference. As Armando Castagno writes, it is a red of melodious beauty, as well as proven longevity. The wine is all about the mineral notes of the hard, almost emerging limestone. It combines structure (with fine but tight tannins) with extreme nobility and elegance.
Joseph Voillot
Launched by Jean Baptiste Voillot in the late nineteenth century, the company first goes into the hands of his son Marius and then to his nephew Joseph, who breaks the habit of selling the whole crop to the shopkeepers and begins the first bottling with the brand of Domaine all 'Start 1950s. Her father, Jean-Pierre Charlot, has been at the helm since 1995. Today, he produces seventeen labels from ten hectares of vineyards owned, limiting the work to the essential, according to the rules of the luttè raisonnée. The most important parcels are distributed between Volnay and Pommard: you always get completely true wines, without rasp, they are as faithful to vintage and to the climates. The short maceration, the low percentage of new wood and a programmatic hostility to any form of oenological intervention can sometimes make them appear a little skinny and bony, but the time is on their part and the territorial matrix always leaves to seize in transparency.
