Galatrona Petrolo 2019
Galatrona is the flagship of Petrolo's wine production. A pure Merlot from an old vineyard that year after year conquers the public and the tasters from all over the world, starting from the first vintage of 1994. The vines were planted during the 1990s by low vigorous Bordeaux clones, beside a lake on soil rich in marl, alberese and sandstone at about 300m above sea level. The ripe grapes are harvested by hand and passed to the sorting table. Fermentation on indigenous yeasts in cement tanks and delicate manual remounts for over 15 days. It matures in French oak barrels, a third of which new, for 18 months, where it also performs malolactic fermentation. For the first 6 months we intervene with constant batonnage of the fine lees.
Elegance and power in a single glass. A great Tuscan Merlot with a deep structure that rotates on the edge of the balance between acidity and fruit, volume and tannins. What immediately appears evident is the elegance with which he manages to drive an extraordinary expressive force.
Petrolo
Petrolo is a historic estate close to the Tuscan Chianti, in the DOC of the Val d'Arno di Sopra, just south-east of the Chianti Mountains. The land is partly affected by the geology of the Arno valley with more typical outcrops of the Chianti area. The company can boast everything it needs, it produces wine, oil and partly honey. Under the organic regime certified since the 1990s, and from 2016 also in the vineyards, it uses natural and sustainable agronomic practices, with targeted interventions reduced to the minimum. The cellar, apart from some recent additions, has remained the same historical, with the use of cement tanks and a splendid barrel room. The vineyards are scattered around the estate and surrounded by the forest, which abounds here and gives balance even in the most complex years to manage. Don't miss the Galatrona tower that dominates the mountains and offers breathtaking views of the estate, and the great hospitality that makes Petrolo an inevitable destination for visits to Tuscany.
