The winery is located in Solicchiata, on the northern slopes of Mount Etna. With just a few hectares of vineyards, low yields, and a philosophy rooted in the belief that humans are incapable of fully understanding Nature—its complexity and interactions—the focus is instead on observation. By carefully studying the various energetic and cosmic changes of Mother Nature, one can follow the guidance she provides.
This box contains:
- Munjebel Rosso P Cuvee Perpetuum I: a cuvée of four different vintages: 2015 – 2016 – 2017 – 2019. Spontaneous fermentation takes place in fiberglass containers, with skin maceration lasting 50 days. This is followed by a minimum of 18 months of aging and around 6 months of rest in the bottle.
- Munjebel Rosso FM 2019: FM, or Feudo di Mezzo, is a vast contrada, which is why Frank prefers to separate the lower part (sottana) from the upper part. Although it lies at a lower altitude, in the valley floor, the wines retain a certain elegance typical of this area. With a softness and refinement reminiscent of Burgundy—even in warmer vintages—this is a truly special wine of great finesse.
- Munjebel Rosso CR 2019: This pure Nerello Mascalese comes from the Campo Re vineyard, partially ungrafted, located in the western part of the valley at the entrance of Randazzo. Sitting at an altitude of 735 meters above sea level, the vineyard has deep soils, which can make it more challenging for the grapes to reach full ripeness in humid vintages. The wines are deep and tannic, slower to reveal their character, and more "Nebbiolo-like" compared to other crus.
- Munjebel Rosso VA 2019: A pure Nerello Mascalese blend from the estate’s three highest vineyards (Vigne Alte): Tartaraci, Rampante Soprana, and Barbabecchi. This wine perfectly captures the value and precision of the old, ungrafted Nerello Mascalese vines growing on the high terraces of Etna’s northern valley. It is the cru that comes closest to a Burgundy-style wine.
- Munjebel Rosso P Cuvee Perpetuum II: For all fans of the first Munjebel, this cuvée is a dream: the solera is composed of four vintages—2015, 2016, 2017, and 2019—sourced mainly from Contrada Piano dei Daini and Contrada Crasà. Spontaneous fermentation takes place in fiberglass tanks with 50 days of skin maceration. This is followed by a minimum of 18 months of aging and approximately 6 months of bottle rest.
- Magma 2016: A “Grand Vin” from the Barbabecchi vineyard, located at 910 meters above sea level and planted around 1910 with a North-Northeast exposure, receiving the first cool rays of morning sunlight. This pure Nerello Mascalese, sourced from old, ungrafted vines, produces a deep, rich, and elegant wine with character, personality, and exceptional finesse. It is only made in the best vintages when full phenolic ripeness can be achieved.
Frank Cornelissen
The company is located in Solicchiata, on the north slopes of the Etna volcano. The philosophy of cultivation is based on the principle that a man is incapable of understanding Nature in its entirety, its complexity and its interactions. They prefer to follow the directions given by Mother Nature rather than deciding what to do and to not do. As a consequence, this choice has led to the avoidance of ground movement, the abandonment of any raw material treatment (chemical, traditional, biological or bio-dynamic) added to the processed product.
The cultivated area of their farm is about 12ha of which 10 vineyards with trees and the remnants of olive trees, traditional fruits, almonds and garden. The annual production is about 20,000 bottles of wine and 600 bottles of olive oil. The products are the result of our hands and only exist with their raw material, without the addition of any other "concealer". Our wines and olive oils with the utmost territorial expression and depth, bear the name Magma®. This selected wine and oil, of singular contrada and vintages, comes from exceptional terrain and geology, between 650 and 1.010 meters of altitude.
