This selection of German wines from Riesling grapes is the fruit of our latest journey of tasting and discovery. A perfect time to grab one of these boxes, which all contain dry white wines with low alcohol contents, vibrant acidity and a definitively 'summery' flavour profile. The trip to Germany in March 2025 and all the barrel-tasting we did in advance allowed us to select the best wines from the splendid and already well-defined 2024 vintage.
Contents of the box:
- Riesling Trocken Adam 2024 - MOSEL - alc. 11%
Riesling from the municipality of Neumagen, from a family business run by the two young siblings Andreas and Barbara, who inherited the Weingut from their parents. Other productions include GG Has'chen, Hofberg, Ohligsberg and above all Piesporter Goldtropchen. Both dry and residual wines are produced, but this Riesling that we are proposing is a dry wine that impressed us with its immediacy, its won balance, a crisp acidity, a citrusy perception classic to riesling, truly refined. A wine that we thoroughly enjoyed. Intense primary fruit nose of peach and pepper. The considerable structure allows it to handle the high acidity on a sensory level. Excellent persistence. - Riesling Trocken Seehof 2024 - RHEINESSEN - alc. 12.5%
Florian Fauth is in the 4th generation of production and has at his disposal an impressive series of famous grand crus (Morstein, Kirchspiel, Steingrube), from which he obtains excellent wines, and offered with a decidedly favourable pricing policy for enthusiasts. The vineyard is south-facing, with calcareous clay soils and underground water veins. strongly mineral wine. A wine that we liked very much. Intense primary fruit nose of peach and pepper. The considerable structure allows it to handle the high acidity on a sensory level. Excellent persistence. - Riesling Trocken Georg Mosbacher 2024 - PFALZ - alc. 12.5%
Sabine and Jürgen Mosbacher-Düringer run this winery in Forst, which was founded in 1920 by a family of winegrowers. Very clean and aromatically well-focused wines, in which the coherence with the terroir is magnificently maintained and the wines are truly chiselled and well-defined in the mouth. Only natural yeasts for this producer, who is well known to wine lovers. The Riesling Trocken 2024 is a wine that plays a league of its own in this category. Centred fruit, personality in the mouth, immediately determined grip and lively acidity. Integrity combined with matter make this wine an excellent ally for keeping a few bottles in the cellar. - Riesling "H" Dr. Hermann 2024 - MOSEL - alc. 9.5%
The Weingut has around 8 hectares of vineyards in the most prestigious crus of Erden and Űrzig (Prälat, Treppchen, Würzgarten) and recently also in the Piesporter Goldtröpfchen, and the Wehlener Sonnennuhr. Christian, who runs the winery, well supported by his wife Julia, initially famous for a particularly happy hand on the high Prädikats (Auslese GK, Eiswein, BA, TBA), which he manages to produce every year, and in which he manages to precisely control the Oechsle thrust, often among the highest in Germany, is now in full expressive maturity on the entire Pradikat range, starting with the Kabinett, all wines in which he manages to read the facets of the vineyards very well. There is no focus on quantity, but rather on quality, to the point of having micro-productions, not so much because of the few vineyards available, but because of the great care and exasperated search for the best. And it is a producer that is also rightly well rated by the most renowned wine guides. Perfect base wine! Very expressive on the nose, irresistibly drinkable in the mouth, prolonging the aromatic sensations in perfect balance, but also 'tickling' the savoury side. Exemplary cleanliness on the exit. Remarkable interpretation by the producer to obtain a wine with this capacity to excel, reinforced by the fact that the grapes come from large vineyards. A very favourable quality/price ratio, unsurpassed on basic wines. As every year, this is a very successful wine! - Riesling Trocken Donnhoff 2023 - NAHE - alc. 12%
Cornelius Dönnhoff now runs the company, and the most important decisions, and grew up alongside his father Helmut, one of those rare producers for whom the term genius should be used. A book would have to be written to recount the goodness of Dönnhoff wines, perfect in all aspects, but of a territorial perfection that is not aseptic. This is a characteristic Riesling from the steep slopes of the Nahe. The vines grow here on volcanic rock, composed in particular of porphyry and Melaphyr, with parts of slate and quartzite. The age of the vines is 15-30 years, with a yield of about 50 hl/ha. Both fermentation and maturation take place in steel and large oak barrels. Dry Riesling very typical of the Donnhoff hand. A bright, fresh and clear, elegant wine with a stimulating minerality. A delicious wine for every moment. - Riesling Trocken Julien Renard 2023 - MOSEL - alc. 11%
Julien Renard is certainly the new man of Mosel and the brilliant and now well-known standard-bearer of a group of small, non-interventionist producers. The winery is in Winningen, in the Terrassenmosel, so well known for its steep terraced vineyards, near Koblenz and the confluence of the Moselle and the Rhine. It started production in 2018 after an apprenticeship in the Heymann-Löwenstein winery. n the vineyard everything is done by hand, the vines managed in the most environmentally friendly way, avoiding the use of herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, synthetic fertilisers and other agrochemicals. In the cellar, fermentation is spontaneous in small used barrels, so as not to detect the slightest hint of wood, without any intervention, and the wine is kept on the lees for about 16-20 months until bottling, without filtration and with minimal addition of sulphites, for a total SO2 typically around twenty mg/litre.
German Riesling is the true parasol wine, even in high temperatures a glass refreshes and gives lightness!
