Bernabaleva

Bernabaleva

We find ourselves at the beginning of the Sierra de Gredos, southwest of the Spanish capital, one of the main mountain ranges of all of Spain. Bernabaleva means "the way of the bear" and it is precisely in the woods of the area that we still find the very old granite sculptures that depict bears. The village of San Martin de Valdeiglesias, was founded in the twelfth century thanks to the foundation of the Cistercian Monastery of Santa Maria de Valdeiglesias. Like in many other areas
the Cistercian monks brought the viticulture to isolated areas in the mountains like San Martin de Valdeiglesias. Bernabaleva was born in 1928, from a nursery who cultivated mainly the Garnacha grafted on American foot. At the time around 35 hectares of vines were planted, including white varieties such as Albillo and Moscatel. In 2006 the owners of the old owner decided to revive the company starting from those 35ha of old vineyards of 80 years located between 400 and 700 meters above sea level on sandy soils of granite origin. Figures such as Raul Perez, one of the greatest Spanish oenologists and later Marc Isart, are involved in the project, the current manager of the cellar that interprets the garnacha of the area with a truly amazing finesse. Organic viticulture and minimum intervention in the cellar, where The vinifications are carried out in conical vats with long submerged cap macerations, up to 3 months on the skins.
