Kerpen

Kerpen

The Kerpen family has been producing Riesling for centuries. Martin Kerpen, owner and wine maker, has been working with his wife Celia since 1988. The soil consists in Devonese Stone Salt  that  gives to the wine the characteristic minerality. All of the the vineyards face south and are  terraced, because of this the work is pretty much manual  . In some areas of the Moselle the slope of the vineyards exceeds 70%.
Much of the land (55%) lies on the Wehlener Sonnenuhr. This steep Rocky vineyard produces some of the most elegant and sophisticated wines of the world. Its gray stones give the wine a fresh and delicate acidity that perfectly balances the aromas of  fishing. The wines of Wehelener Sonnenhur are delightful in their youth, but their aging potential is amazing. Other plots are in Graacher Himmelreich and Graacher Domprobst (35%).
Located between its famous neighbors - the Bernkasteler Doctor and the Wehlener Sonnenhur  - the Domprobst combines the elegance of Wehlen with the rustic power of Bernkastel. Graach wines are always well-structured and need some time to pull out their great personality.
Smaller parts are cultivated in Bernkasteler Bratenhöfchen and Bernkasteler Johannisbrünnchen  (10%). Many lands have free-foot vines, their yields are kept low. The meticulous choice of health ier and mature grapes contributes significantly to quality. Each vineyard is welcomed separately to  reflect the particular style of the individual land. All the vinifications are done in old barrels in the  underground cellar. To maintain freshness, fermentation is slowed by careful temperature control  and filtration is minimal. Martin believes in "reductive" winemaking. The research is oriented  towards clean, fresh and elegant wines with the typical minerality always present. The estate  is known in particular for its dry wines.

Kerpen is a member of the Bernkasteler Ring, an old producer company in the Moselle, which, through reduced yields, pursues the highest possible quality. "Martin Kerpen Riesling shows a clear design: they are all very clean and tend to become something nice and elegant with the passing of years, thanks to a nice acidity.
