Chateau d'Esclans - La Motte

Chateau d'Esclans

Château d'Esclans is located on an exceptional site on elevated ground near the Gorges de Pennafort, twenty-five kilometers northwest of the ancient Roman city of Frejus on the Mediterranean coast.

The earliest traces of the castle site date back to the time of the Gallic people during which its location served as an observation point to detect intruders arriving by boat in the Gulf of Frejus.

The cellar structure or castle foundation (known today as the oldest in the region) housed an original castle that was given by the Count of Provence to Gérard De Villeneuve, in 1201.
The present castle, inspired by the design of the Tuscan villa, was built during the mid-19th century.

In 2006 the property was acquired by Sacha Lichine. From a very young age he has worked in the world of wine, first in the family business, Chateau Prieuré Lichine, then as a sommelier, then in the business of negociant and creating a line of products that are carefully selected from all over France.

With the acquisition of Chateau d'Esclans, Lichine's goal is to elevate the focus on the world of rosés by beginning what he calls the "Rosé Renaissance."
